Student wants all to
be wise to puppy mills
I am a senior at Legacy High School and I am working on a research project about the cruelty to dogs in puppy mills. Before I began my research, I had no understanding of just how bad the lives of these dogs are.
After this research though, I realized it should be my mission to inform others of the horrors of dogs living in puppy mills. That's when I decided to send this letter to the Broomfield Enterprise. I would like to warn readers of the cruelty to puppies that come from puppy mills.
When walking into puppy stores in the mall, all one sees are the cute, adorable faces behind the glass. What they don't see, though, is the horror of where these dogs were bred. Dogs in puppy mills are bred over and over again to produce those puppies that you see in the puppy stores. The dogs have no socialization with humans, they are left in small wire cages their whole lives until they cannot breed anymore, they are never given proper medical attention, and the dogs suffer in all sorts of weather conditions with little to no shelter. These dogs are used for one purpose to make money. The puppies, though, are often sick and diseased from the conditions of where they are kept before they reach the store and over breeding.
Puppy mills are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the same people who put the stamp on your beef. In other words, mill dogs are classified as an agricultural animal. These dogs spend their whole lives as a number, never knowing the loving touch of a human being. I know there have been some articles in the (Denver) Post recently about rescue mill dogs, but I don't think that we can stress this problem enough. Something must be done to help the conditions in which these dogs spend their lives and the people supporting puppy mills by buying puppies from puppy stores. We need to inform people about the horror of where these puppies come from and to stop supporting puppy mills.
