Service Dogs

Today there was an article about service dogs for individuals with mental health issues as opposed to physical challenges. The article was about Luis Carlos Montalvan, a former member of the Army, who had been to Iraq and now suffers from PTSD. His dog, Tuesday, helps him to remember to take his medications. Tuesday can also sense when Luis is about to have an anxiety attack and Tuesday helps Luis maintain composure.

These dogs are trained by prisoners in a program called Puppies Behind Bars, Inc, http://www.puppiesbehindbars.com. Tuesday was trained by a convicted killer. What a great program; what a great service.

Baby Lamb Hugs

In Hampshire, Illinois a famer has offered her baby lambs as a stress reliever. For $4, a person can hold a baby lamb. The mere though of it sounds relaxing.....It will be interesting to know how many people take the farmer up on the offer.

Pack of Coyotes killed in Broomfield

The coyote population has become aggressive. There have been several interactions between man, dog, and coyote of late in Broomfield. Thus, last week the Colorado Division of Wildlife killed a pack of coyotes in an attempt to put a halt to these events.

Letter today in local paper...puppy mills

Student wants all to
be wise to puppy mills
I am a senior at Legacy High School and I am working on a research project about the cruelty to dogs in puppy mills. Before I began my research, I had no understanding of just how bad the lives of these dogs are.
After this research though, I realized it should be my mission to inform others of the horrors of dogs living in puppy mills. That's when I decided to send this letter to the Broomfield Enterprise. I would like to warn readers of the cruelty to puppies that come from puppy mills.
When walking into puppy stores in the mall, all one sees are the cute, adorable faces behind the glass. What they don't see, though, is the horror of where these dogs were bred. Dogs in puppy mills are bred over and over again to produce those puppies that you see in the puppy stores. The dogs have no socialization with humans, they are left in small wire cages their whole lives until they cannot breed anymore, they are never given proper medical attention, and the dogs suffer in all sorts of weather conditions with little to no shelter. These dogs are used for one purpose to make money. The puppies, though, are often sick and diseased from the conditions of where they are kept before they reach the store and over breeding.
Puppy mills are regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the same people who put the stamp on your beef. In other words, mill dogs are classified as an agricultural animal. These dogs spend their whole lives as a number, never knowing the loving touch of a human being. I know there have been some articles in the (Denver) Post recently about rescue mill dogs, but I don't think that we can stress this problem enough. Something must be done to help the conditions in which these dogs spend their lives and the people supporting puppy mills by buying puppies from puppy stores. We need to inform people about the horror of where these puppies come from and to stop supporting puppy mills.

Chihuahua

Yesterday I was in a store when suddenly there was quite the ruckus. Outside the store there was a very large German Shepherd. A woman had walked by holding her Chihuahua in her arms. The Chihuahua went crazy barking at the German Shepherd. I am sure that the German Shepherd was thinking in his head, "Are you kidding me?" That Chihuahua would not stop barking. Finally the German Shepherd starting barking too....I guess he figured he might as well.

Clever boys and their bees

Today there is an article in The Denver Post about three boys in Paonia, Colorado who have become bee keepers. Apparently they decided some years ago that they wanted a means to finance their college education. so at the mere young ages of 14, 12 and 11, they are businessmen. The family farm has the added benefit that the bees pollinate the fruit trees. What clever boys they are....

The end of life...

My sister in law had to put her husky down today because the dog was suffering from an aggressive bone cancer for which there was no cure. Here is a picture of her with her best bud, Mika, having fun in the snow.

Global Warming

Apparently researchers are spending time trying to figure out how to reduce the amount of methane produced by livestock. It seems that livestock contribute tremendously to greenhouse gas production and in fact, have more greenhouse gas production than cars.....now there is a thought. And what about humans, it is not as though they don't create an enormous amount of gas as well. Researchers are trying to change the diet of livestock to see if it will help reduce the amount of methane produced by the animals.....another thought, humans could become vegetarians and stop raising livestock. Not that, as I a dog, I am a vegetarian or that I don't produce gas...it is just an idea.

Lousy writer

I have been a lousy writer of late. I am sure that there are many dog tails to tell but I have not been paying attention. Sorry for my negligence.
